Last spring I applied for a U.S. State Department fellowship to its IREX Teachers for Global Classrooms program. I was informed in September that I was accepted and have been preparing for the last several months to travel with a cohort of teachers to a foreign country to experience the culture, become more globally competent, and learn strategies to help create global citizens among America's youth.
I took an online course for two months with approximately 65 teachers around the nation. We learned about and discussed various strategies and methods for teaching global competencies. I found that adding these competencies to instruction is not difficult, and once you start integrating them, it gets easier. Most importantly, I have witnessed an energy in my students as they investigate the world, understand and value other perspectives, and learn to communicate and take action.
I am currently working on a global learning resource website, which is part of my capstone project required by the U.S. State Department. I will have that complete and attached to this blog during the summer months.
Right now I am busy getting ready for my cohort's trip to Morocco, which I found out last month. My passport is ready. My camera bag is packed, and I'm ready for an adventure!
